Fat grafting is a surgical technique that involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body for use in another area of the face or body. Fat grafting can revitalize the face by adding fullness to restore volume lost by aging, weight loss, or injury. Fat grafting can be performed on its own, or as part of a total rejuvenation that includes another procedure such as a face lift or other facial contouring methods.
Sometimes referred to as micro-lipoinjection or fat transfer, fat grafting can create a natural, more youthful appearing facial contour. Depending upon the extent of treatment, local or general anesthesia may be used. Fat is commonly extracted from the thighs, buttocks, stomach, abdomen, hips or arms with a needle or a liposuction cannula. The fat is then purified and injected into the face to be used as a filler to shape and enhance hollow, sunken, or creased areas. This method is often used to smooth smile lines and plump or define cheeks, chin, and lower eyelids.

Fat Grafting – Fat Transfer Surgery
Men and women are concerned with decreased facial volume resulting in lines, creases, and hollows in the face and wish to restore more attractive definition may benefit from fat grafting. The fat transfer injection procedure can provide some patients who seek rejuvenation with an alternative to facelift surgery. In other cases, fat grafting can also compliment a facelift and other facial contouring methods.
Ideal candidates should be in good health, nonsmoking and have adequate body fat for grafting.
If you are interested in exploring whether fat transfer can benefit you, contact your preferred Healing Waters location to schedule a plastic surgery consultation.
Following surgery, you can expect swelling, bruising and pain or discomfort that can be managed with rest and medication. These symptoms may take two or three weeks to resolve. Recovery time will vary depending on the amount of fat injected or whether any additional procedures are performed at the same time. Strenuous activity should be avoided. Most normal, non-strenuous activity can be resumed within seven to ten days or possibly sooner. The results of the fat grafting are usually readily visible and should improve over several weeks.
The specific risks will depend on the extent of treatment, whether this procedure is combined with other procedures, the type of anesthesia used, the patient’s health, and various other factors. Although rare, some of the risks associated with fat grafting include bleeding, hematoma, complications with anesthesia, change in appearance, firmness, asymmetry, fat embolism (extremely rare), infection, and reabsorption of grafted fat.
In some cases, the fat grafting can take more than one treatment to achieve full results. With many different treatment approaches possible, your plastic surgeon will tailor a treatment strategy to your individual needs and requirements, reviewing the procedure(s) and risks with you in detail prior to surgery.
Fat grafting generally produces long lasting results. After grafting, the body may re-absorb a portion of the fat, in some cases resulting in the need for more than one treatment for best results.
The time needed to recuperate will vary by the type of procedure, the individual, and the occupation. Many patients wait about a week for some of the bruising to subside. Strenuous work or activity should be avoided for a few weeks. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with post-surgical instructions and guidance to fit your specific circumstances.
Fat grafting uses your own body fat as a filler, so there shouldn’t be any chance of an allergic reaction, which could be helpful to patients who have sensitivities or allergies to the products used in dermal fillers. Grafted fat should obtain new blood supply and produce long lasting results. Other types of fillers are temporary and typically last for six to twelve months.
