Facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure to counter the visible effects of gravity and aging in the middle and lower parts of the face by lifting the skin, removing excess skin and fat, and tightening muscles, to restore a more youthful, vibrant appearance.

Full and Mini Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery can correct sagging skin, deep creases and folds, or loss of volume on the lower two-thirds of the face, including cheeks, jawline, jowls, and neck. During the procedure, incisions are typically made around the ears and follow along natural lines or contours to minimize scarring. Incisions may extend along the back of the ear, or sometimes into the hairline at the scalp. An additional incision may be made underneath the chin when needed. Skin and fat are repositioned, muscles are tightened, and excess skin or tissue is removed before suturing.

A full facelift can provide a better outcome for people with more pronounced laxity in the lower face or neck. A mini facelift is a more limited dissection and is less powerful for major problems of the neck, but is good for those with less severe laxity.

A facelift can also be combined with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift for a more complete revitalization. Healing Waters offers a full range of advanced treatments for your aesthetic concerns and can tailor your treatment plan to your goals, with rewarding results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate?

Ideal candidates for facelift are generally healthy, non-smoking, medically fit for surgery. There is no “best” age to undergo facelift surgery. Facelift patients are most typically in their 40s and older, though a facelift may be considered in some slightly younger patients where there has been significant weight loss or premature aging. If the skin on your mid-to-lower face and neck is loose, creased, or sagging, you may benefit from a facelift procedure.

For more information and to determine your candidacy for a facelift, contact your preferred Healing Waters location to arrange a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon. Your plastic surgeon can assess your skin condition, aesthetic concerns and goals, and create a customized treatment strategy to help you attain your desired results.

What to expect post-surgery?

Following surgery, you can expect swelling, bruising as well as pain and discomfort that can be managed with rest and medication. It is best to keep the head elevated for a few days. Sun exposure should be minimized. Exercise and vigorous activity should be avoided for a few weeks. The recovery period is approximately two to three weeks, though this will vary with the patient and the extent of the procedure. It may take a few months for the final results of facelift surgery to become fully apparent.

What are the risks?

Although uncommon, some of the complications associated with facelift surgery include problems with anesthesia, bleeding, hematoma, infection, asymmetry, nerve injury, and problematic scarring.

It should be noted that smoking decreases blood flow to the skin and can lead to infection, skin loss, unfavorable scarring, and an undesired outcome. Active smokers will need to discuss their candidacy and alternatives with a plastic surgeon before being considered for face lift or other procedures. Facelifts are not performed on patients that are actively smoking.

Will I have a scar?

During facelift surgery, incisions are made along the natural contours of the ear, hairline or inconspicuously under the chin. While the scars are permanent, in most cases they fade well and are easily concealed.

Patients with a known history of, or concerns about problematic scarring, such as keloid (red and raised) or hypertrophic (dark in color) scars should confer with their plastic surgeon prior to undergoing surgery.

Is it painful?

For many patients, the discomfort is generally mild and easily managed with pain medication. Due to the swelling and bruising that accompanies a facelift procedure, patients often believe that they look worse than they actually feel. Patients should expect bruising that occurs with facelifts to last for approximately three weeks.

What else can I have done with my facelift?

A facelift is intended to improve the appearance of the lower two-thirds of the face and neck. Facelift results can be enhanced with a variety of additional surgical and non-surgical facial contouring procedures. For example, a brow lift can address sagging brows and frown lines between the eyebrows, and eyelid surgery can help with drooping eyelids. Other surgical facial procedures, such as nose surgery, ear pinning, facial implants, and fat grafting can help to re-shape contours, correct deficits, or add definition. To address fine wrinkles and improve texture and tone, laser skin resurfacing can add further refinement.

Healing Waters offers a full complement of surgical and non-surgical treatments to rejuvenate your face. During your plastic surgery consultation, your surgeon will determine if there are additional procedures that can benefit you, and will work with you to design the best treatment approach.

How long do the results last?

Facelift results last approximately seven to ten years. Although you will continue aging naturally, loose skin and tissue that is removed during the procedure is removed permanently, and you are unlikely to develop the same degree of laxity that you would have had without surgery.

In order to maximize your results, it is important to maintain a healthy skin care regimen, including appropriate sun protection. The Healing Waters team is passionate about skin care and can provide you with individually tailored recommendations and high-quality products for the daily care of your skin.

Should I consider laser resurfacing instead of a facelift?

Laser resurfacing and facelift surgery address different underlying issues that can cause wrinkling or lines in the skin. Creases or folds caused by loose skin are effectively corrected with a facelift procedure. Fine wrinkles or lines that develop as a result of changes in skin texture can be improved with laser resurfacing. Some patients prefer to compliment their facelift with the additional refinement of laser resurfacing.
