Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted fat from areas of the body where excessive fatty deposits have accumulated, improving appearance and proportion.
Liposuction Fat Removal
Some individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and regular exercise still tend to develop and retain undesirable body fat in specific areas. Liposuction can be an effective way to create better proportion and an improved appearance.
Liposuction surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Small incisions are made, and thin surgical tubes (cannulas) are guided through layers of fat to break up the fat cells. The fat is removed by suctioning.
There are various methods of liposuction used for body contouring that can be combined for optimal results. Liposuction may also be combined with additional plastic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck, breast reduction or facelift.
Our plastic surgeons can develop a surgical approach best suited to your needs. For more information about liposuction, contact Healing Waters to arrange a plastic surgery consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ideal candidates for liposuction are nonsmoking, in good health, fit for surgery, have good skin elasticity and tone, and have disproportionate body contours due to fat deposits.
For more information and to consult with a plastic surgeon about your candidacy for liposuction, contact Healing Waters for an appointment.
Following surgery, you can expect swelling, bruising as well as pain and discomfort that can be managed with rest and medication. It is recommended that patients wear a compression garment for a few weeks. Recovery time depends upon the size and number of areas treated. Many patients can resume work with restrictions and light exercise after approximately two weeks. It can take up to six months for all of the swelling to resolve and the final results to be achieved. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with detailed post-op and aftercare instructions to help facilitate a smooth recovery.
After liposuction, the skin will tighten and re-conform to the remaining layer of fat. In certain instances where skin lacks elasticity, loose skin is unable to tighten, and skin folds can develop. In some cases, revision surgery may be indicated.
Some of the other potential complications that can arise include bleeding, excess fluid accumulation, infection, unwanted scarring, asymmetry, contour irregularities, or complications associated with anesthesia.
Your plastic surgeon will thoroughly review the procedure and risks with you prior to surgery and provide you with detailed instructions pre and post-op to help ensure a maximum of safety and comfort with minimum complication.
Liposuction is an effective option for stubborn fat pockets on the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, arms, hips, back, knees, neck, jawline and more. It can be a great way to remove belly fat that remained after pregnancy, “love handles,” “saddlebags,” bra rolls, or other problem areas resistant to diet and exercise.
To learn more about what liposuction can do for you, contact Healing Waters to arrange a personal consultation with one of our plastic surgeons.
Fat cells that are removed by liposuction cannot grow back, allowing for improved contour in areas that are treated. Remaining fat cells in the body can still increase in size if you gain weight, altering your proportions. It is essential to maintain good nutrition and exercise habits to help preserve your improved figure.
Heredity, aging, pregnancy and hormones can all influence cellulite development. Liposuction is not designed as a treatment for cellulite, as it removes deep fat rather than cellulite that forms just below the surface of the skin.
Liposuction is often performed in tandem with other body contouring procedures. Popular combinations include liposuction as part of a tummy tuck, facelift or male or female breast reduction (non-glandular). By combining procedures, excess skin can be removed and tightened after fat is removed, for better contouring.
During the liposuction procedure, the small incisions are carefully placed to be as inconspicuous as possible. Resulting scars are likely to be small and should fade very well with time.
If you are prone to forming hypertrophic (dark in color) or keloid (red and raised) scars, you should consult with your surgeon to determine your options before deciding upon surgery.
